Volunteer Spotlight – November 2022 Catnip Cat Cafe and Feral Affairs Network Team Up to Educate, Celebrate (and Adopt Out) Community Cats

By Team FAN —

Half of the adoptable cats and kittens at Catnip Cat Cafe in the Ghent neighborhood of Norfolk, Va., are from small, all-volunteer rescue group Feral Affairs Network (FAN) whose mission is to help community cats all over Hampton Roads. FAN partners with Catnip Cat Cafe as its primary adoption source to find “forever families” for discarded and homeless cats and kittens.

FAN’s efforts prevent thousands of unwanted feline births annually, working with local municipal and private shelters to offer successful alternatives to euthanasia.

During the 2022 winter holidays, Catnip Cat Cafe and FAN are co-hosting an exclusive event at the Cafe on Saturday, December 3rd (reservations available, starting at 6pm), to educate the community of their cat rescue efforts, introduce adoptable cats (and kittens!) to those who may not be familiar with the cat cafe setting, raise money for the feed and care of cats at the Cafe, and support Feral Affairs Network’s Medical Fund, which includes their growing spay/neuter efforts.

Whether Catnip Cat Cafe visitors donate $5 or $500, contributions will make a huge impact toward ever-mounting medical costs associated with rescuing abandoned cats (and their kittens), the related injuries, illnesses and congenital defects, not to mention merely feeding and housing them and supporting the custodians of the region’s community cat colonies.

Bills continually mount for rescued cats and kittens, into the tens of $1000s. Recent surgeries include black and white kitten, Mouse, who needed bilateral eye enucleation surgery (not just once, but TWICE), and Dominic, the older cat surrendered to FAN after he lost his person and the only home he’d ever known, who was diagnosed with diabetes and painful dental disease requiring EXPENSIVE surgery!

It’s extremely difficult for FAN to afford these unplanned surgeries in addition to the 15 to 20 Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) Spay/Neuter surgeries every week. Help is desperately needed to keep going, and the more time spent on fundraising, the less time can be spent actually rescuing community cats.

The mission of Feral Affairs Network is to reduce the overpopulation of community cats through TNR efforts thus providing relief to overcrowded local animal shelters and taxpayer burden.

Other 2022 events include a Holiday Cat Food Donation Drive-Thru on Saturday, December 10th (10am-3pm), at 3840 E Little Creek Road in Norfolk, Va.
